Race against time to get fresh water to Haiti survivors

Posted on 16 January 2010

• Up to 200,000 are feared dead • Obama promises ’sustained help’ Aid agencies and the US military are engaged in a desperate race to provide earthquake-devastated Haitians with enough clean water to stave off the threat of dehydration and massive outbreaks of waterborne diseases. With hundreds of thousands living on the streets of the capital, Port-au-Prince, following a catastrophe in which as many as 200,000 may have died, the shortage of clean water was emerging as the new focus of the unfolding disaster. The latest estimates for the death toll would make it one of the 10 deadliest earthquakes in history. The body of the UN misson chief in Haiti, Hedi Annabi, was found in the rubble of his headquarters. UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon also confirmed the death of Annabi’s deputy, Luiz Carlos da Costa. Annabi, a Tunisian diplomat, was “a true citizen of the world”, said Ki-moon, who called Brazilian Da Costa “a legend in UN peacekeeping operations”. Nearly 100 UN staff are still unaccounted for.
